ESFI Celebrates National Electrical Safety Month

ESFI Celebrates National Electrical Safety Month

Arlington, VA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 01, 2011

May is National Electrical Safety Month and the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is preparing for the launch of its annual campaign to increase public awareness of electrical hazards and the importance of electrical safety.

“Modern homes run on electricity, but if you don’t properly maintain your electrical products, they can create hazards,” warned ESFI president Brett Brenner. “The good news is that eliminating electrical hazards from your home doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive.”

In the U.S., home electrical problems annually cause more than 51,000 fires, resulting in more than 490 deaths, 1,400 injuries, and $ 1.3 billion in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission show that nearly 400 people are electrocuted in the United States each year.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International sponsors National Electrical Safety Month (NESM) each May to increase public awareness of the electrical hazards around us at home, work, school, and play. This year’s campaign challenges people across the country to evaluate the electrical safety of their homes, learning more about their electrical systems and devices in the process.

This year, ESFI is focusing on the electrical safety of a different area of the home each week during May:

Cooking Up Safety in the Kitchen (May 2–6): The kitchen is where families gather to cook favorite recipes, share warm meals, and reconnect with each other, but it’s also the location where two-thirds of all home fires start. Identify and eliminate potential hazards in your kitchen before someone gets hurt.

Plug into Safety in the Family Room (May 9–13): The family room is an area of the home where many people go to unwind, but there are often many electrical appliances and devices in use in this area. Learn to recognize electrical hazards that can exist in common areas of your home.

Wake Up to Safety in the Bedroom (May 16–20): The average adult sleeps almost 8 hours per night, spending at least one-third of every day in their bedroom. Take steps to make sure your bedroom is safe—you’ll sleep better!

Build a Foundation of Safety in the Basement (May 23–27): Heating equipment and electrical distribution systems are two of the leading causes of home fires. Help keep your home safe by learning the basics of how these systems work and making sure they are properly maintained.

New resources featured in ESFI’s 2011 National Electrical Safety Month Toolkit, such as the Home Electrical Safety Challenge, have been designed to teach people of all ages to identify and correct potential electrical hazards before a more serious situation can result. This complimentary 2011 NESM Toolkit can be downloaded on the Foundation’s website at http://www.electrical-safety.org.

To coincide with National Electrical Safety Month this May, ESFI has completed renovations on its Virtual Home online tool. This dynamic, interactive resource guides users as they navigate a virtual home room by room, building understanding about potential home electrical dangers and electrical safety.

“A healthy respect for electricity and a basic knowledge of electrical safety practices can help keep your family and home safe from electrical hazards all year long,” noted Brenner.

Visit ESFI’s Virtual Home at http://virtualhome.esfi.org/ to learn more.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety. ESFI proudly sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May, and engages in public education campaigns throughout the year to prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities. National Greenhouse Co. Introduces Garden Center Partner Program

Denver, CO (Vocus) March 2, 2010

In early 2010 National Greenhouse Co. will be introducing a unique selling opportunity for select garden centers across the country. The new garden center partner program will promote the National Greenhouse Co. line of home greenhouses through garden center partners. The program is designed to target customers when gardening is top-of-mind priority. It will also provide added revenue and selling alternatives for garden centers with substantial support on behalf of National Greenhouse Co.

Involved in this partnership is a commitment on the part of garden centers. The centers will agree to incorporate a National Greenhouse link on their website, home greenhouse flyers and articles and advertisements in company newsletters. National Greenhouse will provide content, printed flyers, customer sales and service support.

The partnership program is beneficial for garden centers as it presents gardening alternatives for their customers. The partnership is also advantageous for garden centers with landscape businesses. Garden centers can choose to offer installation and additional landscaping services. For example, customers may wish to have paved pathways leading to the home greenhouses. This could produce revenue for the landscaping company while expanding its service line and customer base.

Andrew Gillespie, Residential Products Manager of Nexus Corporation, notes that “The garden center partnership program is an exciting prospect for our garden center customers. It will expand their product portfolio. We are pleased to extend this offer to our network of garden centers and look forward to the benefits it will produce for their customers.”

July is National Park and Recreation Month

July is National Park and Recreation Month

2011 Park and Recreation Month Logo

Ashburn, VA (PRWEB) June 09, 2011

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) is pleased to announce that July is national Park and Recreation Month. Since 1985, Americans have celebrated Park and Recreation Month during the month of July to promote the importance of parks and recreation in establishing and maintaining healthy lifestyles and communities.

This year’s theme is “Rock Your Park!” NRPA and its grassroots initiative, America’s Backyard, encourage Americans to show the country how parks and recreation make life extraordinary! NRPA will support park and recreation agencies and citizens as they plan special events and initiatives that remind local decision makers and the community of the exciting and vital role that parks and recreation play in the lives of Americans.

This year is particularly motivating as there are five weekends in July, giving citizens a record number of opportunities to get out to their local parks and recreation areas and get active. NRPA, in coordination with park and recreation agencies nationwide, is inspiring people to create a healthy weekend habit by getting out to a park, trail, playground, swimming pool, natural area or other public space every weekend this July. To make a personal commitment to get outdoors, citizens can sign the Five in July Park Pledge.

“According to recent studies, about one-third of Americans struggle with inactivity, obesity and associated health challenges,” said NRPA CEO Barbara Tulipane. “Now is time for change. Through Park and Recreation Month, we’re encouraging Americans to get out, get active and get healthy. By signing our Five in July Park Pledge, citizens can become a real part of the movement toward wellness.”

Park and recreation agencies are at the forefront in the fight against obesity and in the campaign for health and wellness; however, their services and programs are dangerously at risk due to budget cuts. National Park and Recreation Month is just one way citizens can develop healthy habits and get out locally to show their support of this vital resource.

To spread the word and demonstrate the power of parks and recreation, NRPA is hosting a national “Rock Your Park” Flash Mob Contest. Citizens are encouraged to put together a group of people and show the power of parks together in Flash Mob form. Also, NRPA is hosting its second annual July Social Media Project. Individuals are encouraged to take photos with the official “Rock Your Park” social media sign and post them on their favorite social media sites.

Through efforts by NRPA, the U.S. House of Representatives passed an official resolution for Park and Recreation Month in 2009. The association supports the national park and recreation community and the general public by advocating for federal support for park and recreation programs and legislation.

As a President’s Challenge Advocate, NRPA is also pleased to promote the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award program in support of the Let’s Move initiative. For those looking to extend their physical activity commitment, the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, or “PALA,” can be earned by taking part in 60 minutes of physical activity for kids (30 minutes for adults), five days a week for six weeks. National Kids to Kids Day Celebrates a New Generation of Global Leaders and Citizens

National Kids to Kids Day Celebrates a New Generation of Global Leaders and Citizens

National Kids to Kids Day is April 30th!

Waltham, MA (Vocus) April 26, 2010

World Connect, formerly Infante Sano, a non-profit that empowers local leaders in underserved communities to solve local problems, today announced plans for the celebration of the first-ever National Kids to Kids Day on April 30. This coordinated event will raise awareness and funds for the Kids to Kids program to bring about positive change in the lives of kids everywhere.

“National Kids to Kids Day is a celebration of the many kids in the US who are committed to getting involved and changing the lives of their peers around the world,” said Sarah Henry, executive director of World Connect. “The day is also a celebration of the thousands of kids in our partner countries who are taking part in the projects Kids to Kids funds. However, in many ways, this day is most about kids everywhere recognizing they are citizens of a global community and that they can have an active role in shaping their collective future.”

For Kids to Kids Day, students are holding local events that spotlight the gap in basic opportunities for youth in education, recreation and cultural programs in countries around the world. The goal is to encourage more students to get involved with Kids to Kids by becoming Kids to Kids Members, helping to raise money and awareness and joining in the online voting that determines which overseas projects are funded. (Read more about the recent round of grants funded by Kids to Kids in “World Connect Funds 51 New Projects through Kids to Kids Program.”

Some of the events our members have planned include:

Groton School, MA: Kids to Kids members are hosting an environment themed day with a cookout, t-shirt sale and student dance
Wayland High School, MA: Kids to Kids members are hosting a movie night fundraiser
Bayview High School, RI: Kids to Kids members are holding a candygram fundraiser at school

For others looking to plan an event for Kids to Kids Day, World Connect offers a toolkit on the Kids to Kids Website.

National Kids to Kids Day comes at an exciting time as the Kids to Kids program is growing on multiple fronts. Kids from 15 states have taken the membership pledge and are helping to build the program in their schools and communities. Kids to Kids is now working to fund projects in 10 countries and, with a total of 230 projects, has affected the lives of more than 12,000 kids abroad.
