ESFI Celebrates National Electrical Safety Month

ESFI Celebrates National Electrical Safety Month

Arlington, VA (Vocus/PRWEB) March 01, 2011

May is National Electrical Safety Month and the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is preparing for the launch of its annual campaign to increase public awareness of electrical hazards and the importance of electrical safety.

“Modern homes run on electricity, but if you don’t properly maintain your electrical products, they can create hazards,” warned ESFI president Brett Brenner. “The good news is that eliminating electrical hazards from your home doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive.”

In the U.S., home electrical problems annually cause more than 51,000 fires, resulting in more than 490 deaths, 1,400 injuries, and $ 1.3 billion in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission show that nearly 400 people are electrocuted in the United States each year.

The Electrical Safety Foundation International sponsors National Electrical Safety Month (NESM) each May to increase public awareness of the electrical hazards around us at home, work, school, and play. This year’s campaign challenges people across the country to evaluate the electrical safety of their homes, learning more about their electrical systems and devices in the process.

This year, ESFI is focusing on the electrical safety of a different area of the home each week during May:

Cooking Up Safety in the Kitchen (May 2–6): The kitchen is where families gather to cook favorite recipes, share warm meals, and reconnect with each other, but it’s also the location where two-thirds of all home fires start. Identify and eliminate potential hazards in your kitchen before someone gets hurt.

Plug into Safety in the Family Room (May 9–13): The family room is an area of the home where many people go to unwind, but there are often many electrical appliances and devices in use in this area. Learn to recognize electrical hazards that can exist in common areas of your home.

Wake Up to Safety in the Bedroom (May 16–20): The average adult sleeps almost 8 hours per night, spending at least one-third of every day in their bedroom. Take steps to make sure your bedroom is safe—you’ll sleep better!

Build a Foundation of Safety in the Basement (May 23–27): Heating equipment and electrical distribution systems are two of the leading causes of home fires. Help keep your home safe by learning the basics of how these systems work and making sure they are properly maintained.

New resources featured in ESFI’s 2011 National Electrical Safety Month Toolkit, such as the Home Electrical Safety Challenge, have been designed to teach people of all ages to identify and correct potential electrical hazards before a more serious situation can result. This complimentary 2011 NESM Toolkit can be downloaded on the Foundation’s website at http://www.electrical-safety.org.

To coincide with National Electrical Safety Month this May, ESFI has completed renovations on its Virtual Home online tool. This dynamic, interactive resource guides users as they navigate a virtual home room by room, building understanding about potential home electrical dangers and electrical safety.

“A healthy respect for electricity and a basic knowledge of electrical safety practices can help keep your family and home safe from electrical hazards all year long,” noted Brenner.

Oklahoma Trucking Accident Lawyers at Atkins & Markoff Alert Public to Recent Changes in Safety Regulations Regarding Commercial Truck Drivers and Driver Fatigue

Oklahoma Trucking Accident Lawyers at Atkins & Markoff Alert Public to Recent Changes in Safety Regulations Regarding Commercial Truck Drivers and Driver Fatigue

Oklahoma City, OK (PRWEB) January 12, 2012

The Oklahoma trucking accident lawyers at the law firm of Atkins & Markoff, which is a law firm consisting of Oklahoma personal injury attorneys who represent individuals who have been harmed in traffic accidents, hereby alert the public to recent changes made with regards to safety regulations that apply to commercial truck drivers. These regulations were put forth by the Department of Transportation and they take effect in January of 2014.

Specifically, the Department of Transportation and its subsidiary, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, have shortened the work week for commercial truck drivers in terms of the hours spent on the roads. They have also instituted a requirement that commercial truck drivers take at least a 30-minute rest break after spending eight hours on duty. However, truck drivers are still allowed to be on the road for up to 11 hours per day, as opposed to the 10-hour limit that existed until 2003.

These changes come after the Department of Transportation completed a survey in 2005 that revealed that 65 percent of truck drivers admitted to driving while feeling drowsy and that 48 percent of truck drivers admitted to falling asleep behind the wheel during the previous year. As stated above, these safety regulation changes take effect in January of 2014.

The Oklahoma trucking accident lawyers at Atkins & Markoff hope that these new regulations will help to bring down the number of trucking accidents overall and the number of Oklahoma trucking accidents that occur. According to statistics kept by the state, more than 2,000 Oklahoma trucking accidents occur on an annual basis, and these crashes result in approximately 1,300 injuries and in more than 100 fatalities.

Electrical Safety Foundation International and Scholastic Bring Safety Tools to School

Electrical Safety Foundation International and Scholastic Bring Safety Tools to School

Arlington, VA (Vocus) May 19, 2010

Electrical Safety Foundation International has teamed up with Scholastic to develop and launch a new electrical safety awareness program delivering critical electrical and fire safety information to children in grades 3–5 at Title I schools. It’s Electric!, which features dynamic teaching tools and educational resources, is currently being used in more than 15,000 classrooms nationwide.

“The electronics that today’s children interact with on a daily basis have enriched their lives; however, these devices and toys can also represent potential hazards if used without the proper education,” stated Brett Brenner, president of the Electrical Safety Foundation International. “Thanks to this grant from the Department of Homeland Security, we’ve created a diverse and adaptive set of tools that will help educate our children about staying safe around electricity.”

To ensure successful learning, ESFI has designed a series of electrical safety lessons that satisfy leading educational standards and reinforce the Foundation’s commitment to fostering safe electrical practices. The It’s Electric! InSchool program will take students on a journey led by ESFI’s mascot, Private I. Plug, to discover the electrical hazards that abound in every day life, as well as the science behind them.

Each year in the United States, electrical accidents and fires kill and injure thousands of people in and around the home. Lower income families and children tend to be at the highest risk of theses types of accidents due in part to a lack of electrical safety education. In addition, home fires are a particular concern with children who may be home without proper supervision or knowledge about what to do when a fire occurs.

Communicating this information to elementary school children through fun, interactive educational materials, featuring a combination of in-depth teaching plans, classroom activities, and online lessons will drive behavioral change and establish proper electrical safety habits that will last a lifetime and may even save lives.

The program provides teachers with materials they can use each year to incorporate important tips, maintenance reminders and safety lessons into their curriculums. ESFI has also developed a series of colorful hands-on learning tools featuring Private I. Plug, including a maze and coloring and activity sheets, which are part of a take-home kit for students to share with their families.

The 2008 Fire Prevention & Safety Grant (FP&S), funded by the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, has allowed ESFI to focus on communicating critical electrical safety messages to a wider audience and providing valuable community education support to U.S. fire service professionals, educators and key stakeholders with an interest in electrical safety and a desire to enhance local fire safety outreach efforts. The FP&S Grant is awarded annually to enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards, prioritizing fire prevention and safety programs aimed at high-risk populations such as children and firefighters.

The FP&S Grants are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG), and are under the purview of the Grant Programs Directorate in the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated exclusively to promoting the importance of electrical safety. ESFI proudly sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May, and engages in public education campaigns throughout the year to increase awareness of the steps that can be taken to prevent electrical fires, injuries, and fatalities in the home, school, and workplace.
